Stored Procedures with .NET code

The following examples are stored procedures written with VB.NET, to highlight a few basic concepts.

The first one displays a string on the text window; this is the equivalent to PRINT ‘Hello World!’ in TSQL.

<SqlProcedure()> Public Shared Sub spHelloWorld()
Dim pipeSql As SqlPipe = SqlContext.GetPipe()
Dim cmdSql As SqlCommand = SqlContext.GetCommand()
pipeSql.Send("Hello World!")
End Sub

The next one will return a dataset by executing a SELECT statement from within the stored procedure. This is similar to EXEC(‘SELECT … in TSQL.

<SqlProcedure()> Public Shared Sub spHelloWorld2()
Dim pipeSql As SqlPipe = SqlContext.GetPipe()
Dim cmdSql As SqlCommand = SqlContext.GetCommand()
cmdSql.CommandText = "SELECT 'Hello World!'"
pipeSql.Execute(cmdSql)
End Sub

The final example uses a data reader to retrieve the data from a dataset and return it.

<SqlProcedure()> Public Shared Sub spHelloWorld3()
Dim pipeSql As SqlPipe = SqlContext.GetPipe()
Dim cmdSql As SqlCommand = SqlContext.GetCommand()
cmdSql.CommandText = "SELECT 'Hello World!'"
Dim rdr As SqlDataReader
rdr = cmdSql.ExecuteReader()
pipeSql.Send(rdr)
End Sub
