Testing the Code

To send a ping (ICMP echo) from to

EXEC master..XP_RAWIP '4500003C4B8B000080018A4FC0A87BBF425EE62008004A5C020001006162636465666768696

What is the use of an XP that sends packets through raw sockets? By itself, it might not be very useful but it becomes a great testing tool when used with a database with IDS (intrusion detection system) data. Snort and ACID are very common IDS tools that work with most databases, including SQL Server. Snort has elaborate rules for intrusion detection and ACID has very detailed monitoring and reporting from Snort’s logs. Every packet that fired a rule will be stored in the database as part of the log and it might be analyzed later. XP_RAWIP can be used to test particular IDS rules or it can “replay” captured packets for testing new rules. It can assure that a new set of rules still detects old threats or that is effective against new ones. There are many possibilities. In the next chapter, we turn our attention to Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and its increasing important role in database development.
